The Beatles

Here is a band that I think many of us know very well. My mom is always talking about The Beatles. The band was made in the year 1960 in Liverpool, England. They have released over forty different albums and singles that have made number one in many lists. I personally think that they would be like around 15 in my list of favorite bands. Some of their hits include “Come Together”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Hello, Goodbye”, etc. The Beatles introduced a brand new wave of music. There are popular bands like Guns n’ Roses, AC/DC, Van Halen, etc. but none of them sound a thing like The Beatles do. Yet The Beatles still made it, evn though some of their music I don’t understand. As many would say: “The Beatles are one of a kind.” Their sucess was huge as they made a movie, concerts with special guest stars. You know, things like that. It is too bad that John Lennon died. The other Beatles (George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Star) also don’t have much left to go. Although they broke up and are old, people like Elton John and U2 worship them. They are sort of an inspiration for me too.

Killswitch Engage

Hardcore heavy metal. Isn’t that the music that my grandma likes? Oh wait, that’s classical. Hardcore heavy metal is the type of music that my cousin likes. Now I remember. Killswitch Engage is a true band of the metalcore genre. I like a few of their songs, but others are just too weird for me. Too much screaming, not enough singing. A lot of Metalcore bands seem to do that a lot. Henry Jons is probably my favorite metalcore singer. He has a nice deep voice and a great heavy metal scream. I also think that Adam is a great lead guitarist, although you don’t hear many solos. Of course, this is only my opinion. My mom likes Korn ALOT better than Killswitch Engage, but that’s just our difference of our opinion. I have no idea why I like this band. All it is is just a bunch of noise. Maybe it’s the mixes, or maybe I just like how the singers or guitars sound. I think that if you like something, do it. A lot of people would like to see Killswitch Engage break up because of musical differences. Others almost worship Killswitch. I’m sort of in between. Why do people pay attention to other music if they don’t like it? I say: If you don’t like it, then stick to your own things. Well, I’ve spoken my opinon all I know is that I like this band. I will see you all later.

Van Halen

Once again, a band with a best. Everyone says that this is one of the greatest guitarist in the whole world, Eddie Van Halen. Van Halen is an American rock band who have been one of the most successful bands in history. With over 80 million albums sold, they have had the most number 1 hits in the Billboard mainstream rock chart. The members include Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, Wolfgang Van Halen, and David Lee Roth. Haha, you can see why they call themselves Van Halen. I first heard of this band when I got my first ipod. I was just barely starting to get into music back then, and I wanted my mom to recomend some band. The first three bands she said were Tom Petty, The Cars, and Van Halen. The only band that I already knew was Tom Petty so I asked her who Van Halen and The Cars were. She thought that I should decide for myself and she put some of their songs on my ipod. My first Van Halen song was “Jump”. I really liked it. Then I decided to try “Hang ‘Em High”. I also really liked that one too. I was glad that my mom introduced me to Van Halen, they are now one of my favorite bands.

Most kids these days in the States don’t like bands like Van Halen, Tom Petty, U2, The Cars, etc. Usually they like bands like Green Day, Switchfoot, My Chemical Romaance, and other bands like that. Don’t get me wrong, those bands can rock. All I’m saying is that those are the only bands that I hear whenever I visit my friends’ house in the states. There is a lot more Artists out there, and countless songs. No one has heard every song in the world. Van Halen is considered one of the best bands in the world, and thatis a big honor considering how many are out there, famous or not. Well, I guess I better be going now. I have to try out another band that my mom reccomended to me called SuperTramp. Maybe I’ll like them and maybe I won’t, but at least I tried them. See you!

The White Stripes

I’m so excited! My mom just told me that she might be able to get the White Stripes to Vertigo. What? You don’t know thw White Stripes? It is one of those two people bands, which if you ask me is pretty hard to do. The members of the band are Jack and Meg White. They are a band of many genres such as Punk, Blues, garage revival, and Alternative rock. One of th really cool things that I like about them is that their music really relates to spanish music. Haha, you ould almost say that their music has a spanish accent. I still remember the first time I ever heard about them It was last summer, and we just went to a place called Virgin records. I got a Switchfoot CD and my dad got a CD by the name of Icky Thump. I thought that that was a really weird name and I also did a bad thing by judging a book by it cover because when my dad played that CD, I imediatily felt a connection with my Bolivian/Mexican ancestry. Like I said before, the music had some sort of accent. I asked my dad what that song was called and he said that it was called “Icky Thump.” (See below) I thought that I should give the band another chance, and once I did, I ended up liking them.

The White Stripes origionally formed in Detroit in 1997. Their first performance was in July 14, 1997, and they should’ve been proud considering how good they are. After creating their first album, Detroit reviews said that they were “the most raw power in Detroit”. Of course my favorite album didn’t come until much later considering the fact that my dad bought it last summer saying it was just released. Well, I hope that you enjoy “Icky Thump” as much as I did. You can skip the boring anouncement or what ever it is. I hope that you detect the spanish “accent”.

Iron Maiden

This is a true band, a Christmas present, Iron Maiden. Steve Harris started this band on Christmas Day in 1975. They are a pretty old band, but they keep on coming. Like many other great bands, they were formed in London. Even with no radio support, Iron Maiden has sold over 100 million copies worldwide, therefore are one of the most influential bands in the Heavy Metal genre. Although many people call them Satan worshippers because of their lyrics, I think that they are like AC/DC in the fact that they are trying to tell a story. You see, my dad taught me that every song is a story, and each album is a book. There are artists who tell stories that are fun and happy, and other artist tell stories that have a sad or bad but interesting ending. A perfect example of that kind of band is Iron Maiden. Let’s pick my favorite song by them: Number of the Beast. In this song, Iron Maiden talks about the number six hundred and sixty six. I think that most of us know that 666 is considered the devil’s number. Many people mistook the band as devil worshippers because of this song. All Iron Maiden was trying to do was tell a story about the number and its meaning.  In the 33 years Iron Maiden has been around, they have won many awards such as the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement and 4th in MTV’s top ten heavy metal bands. On New Year’s eve 1978, the band released their first recorded album. They sold 5 thousands within a couple of weeks, even though it had five songs on it. This just goes to prove the power of Iron Maiden. Well, I have to go, it’s dinner time. Enjoy the video!

Rush

What does it mean to be “the greatest”? Is it speed, or timing, or looks. Is being the greatest also have to do with being the most popular? For me, being the greatest requires two things. One, I think that it means to be original. Two, you have to have soul. Without soul, there is no music. This is a band that has soul. This band has originallity. This band has the greatest drummer of all time. This is a band known as Rush. This a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto. They’ve come a long way since 1968. They have influenced many bands like Primus (whoever they are), Smashing pumkins (I’m not suprised), and Metallica(surprisingly). Rush hasn’t broken up yet, so many people are still dazzled by them (my parents were in the sixth row in a concert last summer). They have 24 gold records and 14 platinum records, and they are in fifth place for the most consecutive gold and platinum winners besides the beatles, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, and Kiss. There is Geddy Lee, a singer with an origional voice, Alex Lifeson, an insane  guitarist, and Neil Peart, the most greatest drummer of all time. Neil writes all of Rush’s songs, and therefore writes his own style of drumming. A perfect example of a Neil Peart wanna- be is the drummer from The Police. sure he is a pretty good drummer, a great one in fact, but nothing beats Neil Peart. Neil is inspired by old drummers such as Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice, and John Bonham. See? Even the greatest have someone to look up to. The video below is a song called spirit of the radio. Really listen to the drums in the beginning. It gave me the chills. I will see you all in my next post (or not) and have a good half a day. Bye.

My music passion

Ever since I was like in the second grade, there was always tis one song called dirty deeds by AC/DC that I would always listen to. I wasn’t into music that much back then, but I started to like it more after my dad and mom introduced bands to me. My mom introduced me to bands lik U2, Rush, Metallica, The Police, Led Zepplin, Tom Petty, The Cars, The Clash, Ozzy Osbourne, and much more. My dad introduced me to bands like Rob Zombie, AC/DC, Guns n’ Roses, Orson, Rage Against the Machine, Infected Mushroom, Queen, and Van Halen. As you can see, my parents like heavy metal, rock, rock/blues, and so much more. After getting my ipod for the first time in my 12th Christmas, my parents would always say, “get this song” or, ” I can’t believe that you don’t know this song, you should try it out.” When I was 12, that’s when I really started to like music. My friend, Sebi, showed me artists like Green Day and My Chemical Romance, and I thought that they were pretty good. I have these phases at times. Have you ever listened to  a band, and started to listen to most of their songs for a long period of time, and then went on to the next artist? No? Well, I have, and it is pretty weird but fun. I’ve noticed another thing about music. Out of all the people I ask, the average person always says the same thing. What I ask is, “what is your favorite song?” and people always answer, “I don’t know, there are so many good ones.” I can understand that, but I can say mine right away. Personally, my favorite song is Miracle Drug by U2. U2 is my favorite band of all time. I never really got into them until I saw the video below, It practacally changed the way I think. Well, I’ll be checking out, see you (or not) on my next post. Bye.

Queen

This is the first time that I write about a band that is not around anymore. All of the other bands that I have written about are legends, but this band is considered an old legend. They were an english band formed in London at the year of 1970. Ever since 1975, their albums have been hitting number one in charts all around the world. Their first single “Killer Queen” hit number two in british charts, and Queen’s first U.S. hit. It all went downhill from there. It is too bad that Queen had to break up because of a man named Freddie Mercury died. His final recording was a song called “Bohemian Rhaspody”. The legendary singr died of AIDs, even though he denied having them. As a memory to them was made in movies such as “Happy Feet”, “Cheaper by the Dozen 2″, “Chicken Little”, “Wayne’s World”, and a lot more movies that would take too long to list. They even made an album called “Queen III”. Queen was once here, but they are here no more. We hope that Nothing will stop us now as stated in this song. Rest in Peace Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor. Many will miss you.Don't Stop Me NowInformation from wikipedia

Metallica

Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an ad in the paper in Los Angeles. Their origional music consisted of fast tempos, instrumentals and musicianship. They were placed in the top four of the “Thrash Metal” genre along with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth. The band started to be recognized in 1991 with the album “Metallica”, which for me personally is their best album. All in all, they released eight studio albums and two live albums. With over 100 million albums sold worldwide (wow) they have won seven Grammy Awards. Their album “Metallica” has sold over 20 million copies which makes it the 25th highest selling albums in the United States. I am not suprised that they are the most sucessful “Thrash Metal” band alive today. Right now they are working on a ninth album, and we all will be looking foward to that. Stephen Thomas Erlweine and Greg Patro of the All Music Guide said,”They are easily the best, most influencial heavy metal band of the eighties, and they are responsible for bringing music back to earth.” They have inspired people like Avril Lavigne, Korn, Snoop Dogg, and Limp Bizkit, and Metallica’s music will be remembered for all time.

AC/DC

AC/DC was a band that we would hear their name frequently in the past. They were legends, even when Bon Scott died. With the head banging members of Brian Johnson, the singer, Angus Young, the lead guitarist, Cliff Williams, the bassist, Malcolm Young, Rythym guitarist, and Phil Rudd as of course the drums. You might know them from some songs like “Back in Black” or “TNT”. Formed in Australia by two brothers, They are definetly a band that has made it, especially after the “Back in Black” album. That album has sold over 42 million worldwide. Pretty good, huh? After the death of Bon Scott, many candidates have auditioned but Brian Johnson won, because Angus said that he was one of Bon’s favorite singers. After that, they just couldn’t stop touring. True to their name, they are raw power. In 2003, AC/DC was put into the rock and roll hall of fame. The band performed “Highway to hell” and “You shook me all night long” during the ceremony. Yes, AC/DC is a legend, and though they are old men now, their names will live forever. Here is an example of the power that is AC/DC. Here’s One called “Thunderstruck”, you ready? Long live AC/DC.
